Lavumisa has two governance structures as provided for in the Urban Government Act of 1969. These are the Council and Management. Lavumisa has one ward and five councillors (even though there were two vacant positions at the time of the IDP development). Their major role is to provide strategic direction to LTB and its operations. The tenure for councillors is 5 years. Once in office Council members then elect from themselves a Mayor who is non-executive and serves in the office for a period of one year. The Town Mayor is the political head of Council.
